I was scrolling through YouTube yesterday when this video popped up in my feed. For months, I’ve been asking people how to rotate properly, and I’m still confused about it. As the reverse spine angle queen, I really feel like this is paramount to correct.
As I watched the video, I realized something: everything the student struggles with, I do too—reverse spine angle, over-the-top swings, and not squaring the clubface. It was like watching my own swing on screen. Well, my swing with a lot more contact and power.
The instructor highlighted a few key fixes that don’t sound unique on paper but were pretty helpful to me:
- Fix the Reverse Spine Angle: Keep the upper body more stacked over the lower body in the backswing to improve stability and reduce swiping across the ball.
- Improve Rotation: I tend to over-rotate (unlike the student in the video), but I’ve also been told I don’t get my shoulders over the ball. AI says my buckle should rotate 30–45º away from its position at address, while my chin gets over or slightly behind the ball.
- Square the Clubface: Focus on letting the toe of the club ‘win the race’ against the heel through impact to help close the face and avoid slicing.
I’m saving this video and plan to fiddle around with some of these suggestions when I get back to the range. It’s a far cry from the half swings that have been giving me better contact, and it doesn’t address weight shift at all, l, but I’m curious to see if—or how—this changes my swing.
